  • Fotodoti Christou Monastery - Tower

Location:  near the village of Danakos

Description: considered to be the oldest monastery on Naxos. Its hagiographies and dated signage allude to the Byzantine Era.

The interpretations of this signage regarding how the monastery was built are many: some depict its having been built by a Byzantine princess; others deem that there was an ancient castle on the site; and while still others suggest the possibility that the Empress Irene or the son of Alexis Komnisos built the monastery in the 12th century, when the victor returned from some military campaign.

The monastery was especially wealthy and renowned during the period of Frankish rule. Legend has it that Byron visited the monastery, and carved his name - as was his custom - on a column.

The monastery passed at some point to Patmos’ jurisdiction, as a dependency of the Monastery of  St. John the Theologian.
