Upper Kastro
Location: between the Potamia and Tragaea. From the villages of Koutsoheradho and Tsikalario there is a path leading to the Upper Kastro.
Description: the Kastro dominates the entire area; and from its highest point, there is a unique view of the Tragaea basin, Filoti, the Monastery, Potamia and the area of Sangri.
The area seems to have been inhabited since ancient times (at least from the Geometric Era, 9th to 8th century, B.C.); and the ruins of ancient burial grounds as well as other constructions (reservoirs, faucets, etc.) are distinctive. Furthermore, at the entrance of the burial ground there is a “menir”, i.e., a large upright stone three meters in height. By the same token, the small churches that exist attest to the area’s use during the Byzantine Era.
During the period of Frankish rule, the Venetians turned toward the interior of the island and constructed (in the 13th to the 14th Centuries) and used the Upper Kastro perhaps either for security reasons in the event of raids by forces from the sea, or to control possible revolutionary movements of the local population within the hinterland. Today only several edifices are kept in good condition, like the “crenellation”, the rampart, namely, of Upper Kastro.
