The island of Naxos has enjoyed a long run in the passage of time. Excavations that have taken place on the island have brought to light significant finds from ancient times up to the Byzantine Period. The finds have been concentrated in the Museums and Collections in the capital town of Naxos (“Chora”) and also in other areas of the island.

Noteworthy are the castled groupings on the island - many of them have been converted into museums - and reveal the intense presence of the Venetians during the post-Byzantine Period. Equally important is the existence of museums featuring popular art that depict the culture and way of life of Naxian civilization throughout the last centuries.
