Weavings & Ceramics
Traditional weaving arts occupy a prominent place in Naxos Island’s history of handicrafts. In most of the houses on the island there are still looms where impressive hand-made weavings, depicting local customs and traditional themes, are created.
The krevataria (“looms” in the local dialect) consist of 153 parts; if even one of the pieces fails, weaving is rendered impossible, since the loom contains combs, warps, and other necessary paraphernalia.
The output of these looms is mainly for household use – curtains, bed coverings, tablecloths, pillow shams, etc.
Women’s cooperatives display and promote the weaving arts at exhibitions held throughout the island, but especially in the viallages of Komiaki, Moni, and Apiranthos.
The Women’s Traditional Arts Cooperative was founded in 1987 at Apinathos village, following the initiative of the then President of the Village Council, Manolis Glezos, and continues successfully in its mission to this day.
Finally, there is a strong presence of hand-crafted weavings at Naxos Island’s folklore museums that offer the visitor just a small taste of the traditional arts of the island’s women, while pottery from Naxos Island’s ceramics industry decorate the island’s shops.
