At Filoti village, on top of a sharp steep rock outcrop, there stands the Byzantine church of Ai Yiannis Prodromos. The Panagia Aria - which according to legend was destroyed by pirates - constitutes an important church of the period (a domed temple with remarkable adornment of paintings, of the 13th - 14th centuries). At Filoti, there are still to be found the Panagia Arliotissa, Ag. Polykarpos, and Ag. Theos (Theologos) on the rear side of Za and Ag. Georgios at Fyonda. In the quiet village of Atsipapi, there is the Panagia Keras (7th century).

At Apiranthos village there is the Ag. Georgios, Ag. Pachomios, the Anonymos Stavrikos Temple of Apiranthos, and Ag. Dimitrios (iconoclastic churches). Ag. Antonios was once a church of the Frankish Tower Somaripa. In the wider area there are basilica churches, with remarkable frescoes: Ag. Minas, Victor and Vikendios (Theotokos) with dated signage from 1821. To the north, there is the church of Ag. Ioannis Theologos. On the road to Koronos village, the church of Stavrou Keramotis operates.

In the villages of Trageas, the visitor comes upon a large number of Byzantine churches (with icons from the 11th and 12th centuries, and frescoes from the iconoclastic period]. Among the most important is Ag. Konstantinos Vourvouria (13th century) and the iconoclastic churches of Ag. Georgios and Ag. Ioanns Theologos (13th century), with interesting frescoes at Kaloxilos village. Don’t fail to visit at Metochi villafe the Byzantine church of Ag. Apostoloi (one of the oldest and notable for its architecture), Ag. Stefanos at Tsiklario village (with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries) and Panagia Rachidiotissa. At the center of Damariona village, the old church of Christ can be found (with its sculptured wooden chancel screen).

At Sangri village is located Ag. Nikolaos (domed church with paintings of the 13th century) and Ag. Eleftherios (one of the oldest monasteries, it operated as a school during the Turkish domination). At Gyroula area, where the ancient Demeter temple is location, there is the little church of Ag. Ioannis. Here, in 1815, the abbot Kallinikos founded a school. At Palaiologou Tower the little church of Panagia Pyrgou is located.

On the road from Sangri to Agiassos village there are still two Byzantine churches, Panagia Arkouliotissa (or Arkoulou) and Ag. Georgios Lathrinou (iconoclastic church). It is strongly suggested that this area was the political and ecclesiastical seat of Byzantium. Below the Apaliros’ Kastro, there is Ag. Ioannis of Theologos Adisarou (an arch-covered domed iconoclastic church, with abstract adornments. The semi-circular apse particularly stands out. In addition, there is Ag. Ioannis Bauzi and the Pangia Archatou. According to legend, this church is the “Panagia Archondon” (domed temple, a kind of free-standing cross with dated signage going back to 1286 and frescoes of the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.)

Near the beach at Agiassos, there is the Panagia Yiallous (end of the 13th century), chapel of the Panagia, with a low dome and conical form outside, and notable frescoes. The church is adorned with samples of Byzantine art. Near Danakos village there is the small church of Ag. Marina (built above a crossroads].

At Galanados village, there is the small church of Ag. Georgios and Ag. Ioannis at the Tower of Belonia (a very small church that was used by both Orthodox and Catholics). At Glinado village, you’ll find the church of Ag. Nikodimos (patron saint of Naxos); at Tripodes village the church of Panagias (with old wood-sculptured a chancel screen and rare icons); and at Ag. Arsenios village the churches of Ag. Spyridonas and Ag. Nikolaos.

In the area surrounding Ag. Arsenios, there are scattered around little churches and the Monastery of Ag. Ioannis. At Melanes village there is Ai Giorgis with notable frescoes. At Ano Potamia village, on Pighis Square, the church of Ag. Ioannis can be found. On the way up to Za, there is at Finelia the little church of Ai Yiannis.

Very close to the Chora there is the women’s Ag. Chryssostomou Monastery (17th century), which had the characteristics of a fortress. The monastery assumed its current form during the years of Metropolitan Anthimou (1749-1789] while the icon of Ag. Ioanni Chryssostomou dates back to 1818. Next to it is the church-cave Thealogaki, at Chryssostomou’s side. At area of Grota there are two monasteries, Ag. Paraskevi and Ag. Georgios that also operated as schools during the Turkish domination.

Other iconoclastic churches on Naxos are: Ag. Ioannis Chryssostomos at Kaloritsa, Ag. Ioannis Theologos at Danakou, Ag. Kyriaki at Kechron. Indications of iconoclasm also are to be seen at churches Monasteriotissa at Engares, and Ag. Georgios at Ropiki.
