  • Ag. Antonios of Padova or “Capukinon Monachon” Monastery

Location: at the Kastro in the Chora, east of Panagia Theoskepasti

Description: consists of two parts: the church - dedicated to Ag. Antonio of Padova - and the main group of buildings of the Monastery. The temple is single-aisled with a belfry and cupola, and three altars decorated with many beautiful icons and a superb pulpit. It’s a two-story structure, with subterranean storage rooms, a garden in the back, many rooms and helpers’ quarters. The monastery’s transom is decorated with a sculpture depicting a Capuk Monk praying earnestly in front of the Cross. Its floor depicts graves of nobles with coats of arms (Koronel - Krispi and Lorentano - Kastri).

Today the temple of Ag. Antoniou and the Capukinon Monastery is being refurbished after years of neglect, as is also the case with the remaining Catholic monuments of the Kastro. The monastery is not inhabited permanently by monks, but is used instead in the summer as a guest house for Catholic children from schools in Athens.
